Don’t Be Spooked: Halloween Is Happening

As rustling leaves begin to fall and cold days draw closer, many are haunted by the question: How will we celebrate the holidays this year? Especially Halloween!
Fact is… Halloween will look and feel a little different this year as people decide how they will celebrate. Whether it’s having fun from a distance, trick-or-treating, enjoying Halloween at home or something in between, Rotarians and others in our community are finding creative and fun ways to celebrate Halloween 2020.
With a little creativity and a dash of magic, families everywhere can transform some favorite traditions into at-home adventures and socially distanced fun.
Here are some clever ideas…
  1. Keep the “trick” by Surprising your neighbors. Drop a bag of candy on their doorstep, or place individually wrapped bags of candy outside your home for passers-by to take.
  2. Miles Apart Trick-or-Treating: Send candy-filled care packages to loved ones around the country.
  3. Spooky Campfire Tales: Share scary stories around a virtual campfire. Take turns reading — or imagining — terrifying tales.
  4. Stroudsburgs Rotary members can “treat” your President by sharing a few stories about Rotary. No Tricks…lol

Lee Ann Hussey

Our last week's speaker was Ann Lee Hussey, a polio survivor and advocate for Polio Plus. She zoomed in from Berwick, ME to share her experiences and interestingly compared polio outbreaks to our current COVID-19 panic experience. She has been to many National Immunization Day events and her commitment to eradicating polio never wavers. Parallels were quarantining, social distancing and masks then and now. Reminded us to never underestimate the impact of kindness. We have to remember what we can accomplish when we are faced with adversity. The first ventilator was used for a polio victim. Health care workers proved to be the hero in both situations. Rotary has been at the center of the fight for over 3 decades. Karen DeMatteo also offered information on International Committee initiatives. Only countries remaining with active cases are Afghanistan and Pakistan. Last year 100M children under 5 have been inoculated by two magic drops.
Rotarians in Action
Great job Rotarians Jim Becker, Past President Jeff Gilbert, Lisa Baldwin, Andy Kolba, Gene Prospero, Bill Asher, and Stacy Rodriguez for moving file cabinets from Faith United Methodist Church to Pocono Mountains United Way. Thanks to those who were able to provide trucks to make this happen. This was a quick turn around response to request from United Way. Rotary responds to community needs.
Reverse Raffle
Don Hannig and his committee are hard at work at pulling together an awesome Reverse Raffle. The event will be at the Armory on 271 Washington St in East Stroudsburg. Only the first 200 tickets received will be in the raffle. At this point, all Stroudsburgs Rotarians should have received two tickets. More are available upon request. In addition to the top 3 cash prizes of $5,000, $2,500 and $1,000, there will be overnight stays, gift certificates, LED flat screen TV and more prizes. Please contact any local business or restaurant that would be willing to donate any additional prizes. This was a great event last year and promises to be even better this year with your help. This is our major fundraiser so that we in turn can help our community through our Stroudsburgs Rotary Foundation.
