Our Rotary Foundations and The Power of Giving
November is Rotary Foundation Month and in 2020-21, Rotary International Foundation turns 104.  That’s more than a century of Rotary members changing lives and improving communities all over the world. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.

Rotary Foundation has been awarded with a stellar charity rating, and recognized for its unique funding model and Strong financial oversight. This means that the Foundation makes the very most of every contribution.

Furthermore, Foundation grants empower Rotarians to tackle community and word challenges with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. Rotarians address issues such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition, as well as support thousands of projects that bring solutions like providing clean water, fighting disease, promoting peace, providing basic education, and growing local economies.
Some projects I really like:
  • The Mamo Bus, which offers free mammograms in India.
  • Stroudsburgs Rotary’s Headstart Project, which put technology into the hands of children to help them learn.
  • In October Special masks were created by Rotarians Kin Roberts and Karen DeMatteo which were sold to raise funds for the End Polio Now Campaign.

In addition, every donation to The Stroudsburgs Rotary Foundation, helps members make a difference in the lives of thousands locally. Give and become a part of Rotary’s life-changing work! Please ask your friends to donate too.      https://stroudsburgsrotary.org/page/foundation

Eastern Monroe Public Library
Our guest speaker, Sue Lyons provided an interesting discussion on several initiatives happening at our local library. EMPL enterprise comprises of 3 branches, a bookmobile and a library at the Correctional Facility servicing 10 municipalities. Sue shared how the library is managing the operations during the pandemic from March 13 when Governor Wolfe ordered a mandatory closure to the phased reopening. The library initiated many changes to ensure safety of patrons and employees. There are reduced hours, hiring a cleaning company to clean midday when the library closes from 1-2. There are shower curtain setups and shields where staff interact with the public and returned books are in quarantine for 72 hours before they are shelved.
Additionally, Sue updated us on the newest branch which will be opened shortly. This will be a permanent home for the Library of the Smithfields located in a Community Center with the Middle Smithfield Township supervisors. The facility will be in Echo Lake Park.

Special recognition goes to Don Hannig and his committee for all their hard at work at pulling together a very successful Reverse Raffle. Special thank you to Rich Berkowitz for hosting us at this beautiful facility. Rob Howell was the top prize winner, Ted Butz took second place and Jennifer Narkavich was the third place winner. There were many prizes all the way thanks to all of you who donated or secured donations from local merchants. This made for a fun event.
