Polio Defined and Rotary’s Efforts to Eradicate It
October is fast approaching and Rotary’s work to eradicate polio around the world is celebrated on the 24th. I felt that sharing a few facts about the disease would enlighten us all as to the importance of the work being conducted. Polio is an intestinal virus that is spread though contact with feces of an infected person. In places where sanitation is low, water or food can become contaminated. Therefore, washing of hands after using the rest room, as well as proper disposal of fecal matter is imperative.
  • The poliovirus is encased in a protective coating called a capsid
  • There are three variations of the poliovirus which differ in their coatings
  • The virus infects only humans, mainly children under the age of five.
  • There is no cure.
  • The virus latches onto a receptor on the surface of a cell, multiplying in the lining of the intestines.
  • The virus enters the cell and hijacks the cell’s own machinery to make copies of itself.
  • The virus is released to infect neighboring cells, spreading from the digestive tract to lymph nodes and the bloodstream.
  • The virus replicates and is excreted through feces starting the cycle all over again.
Rotary works with partners around the world to help eradicate polio, which permanently cripples 1 in 200 people who contract the disease.
The Rotary Foundation awards millions in PolioPlus grants to raise awareness, help pay salaries of health professionals, and for disease detection activities.
In October, Rotarians are asked to contribute just $26 as an easy way to help.  Won’t you help?

Bob Wehe Memorial Blood Drive
On September 21, our club hosted the Bob Wehe Memorial Blood Drive at the Lighthouse Full Gospel Church of God. The Red Cross goal for the day was 26 units, and because of everyone’s efforts they collected 42 donations saving up to 126 lives yesterday, what a nice tribute in Memory of Bob! They had 28 donors come to donate yesterday, only 1 was not able to donate, and they had 8 donors donating on power red machine which accounted for 16 of the donations.
Global Grant Presentation
On Wednesday September 9, the Kick-Off meeting for the Global Grant which will benefit children enrolled in the Pre-K program at Monroe County Head Start was held at The Mountain Center.  Present at the meeting were members from our Club that will serve as the oversight committee, as well as representatives from the four other Monroe County Clubs that also provided funding. This includes the Blakeslee, Mt. Pocono, Pocono Mountain and the West End clubs. We met with Tim Lee, Executive Director, Pocono Services for Families and Children, which oversees the Head Start program. We went through key elements of the program timetable, discussed payment rules and procedures, and went through a question and answer session that enabled additional understanding of program details. We expect to receive funds from Rotary International and District 7410 shortly so we can give Head Start the go-ahead to begin purchasing computers and funding training as proposed under the grant.
Special thank you to our guest speakers last week. Emily Heffner shared information about the services that Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services, Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, Department of Labor & Industry provides at the Luncheon Meeting. At the evening meeting, attendees learned about School Gardens and Nutrition Education in Haiti from Rosedanie Cadet.
