February is Peace & Conflict Prevention Resolution Month

"Today, the globe faces a series of interlocking challenges that are manifesting in violent conflict around the globe. Yet we refuse to accept conflict as a way of life."

"Rotary invests in peace education and capacity building, fosters strategic relationships, and integrates peacebuilding into all of Rotary’s programs and service.

We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.

By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources."

Recap

During the evening meeting of Jan 22, Art Teacher and the past Chair of the evening club Lucy Shunk led a beautiful card making session for Meals on Wheels recipients. Recipients are always so appreciative of being remembered. We look forward to Lucy returning as a member. She has been published twice and her significant other appears to be interested also. Everyone at the lunch meeting prepared cards last week on Feb 5. In total we prepared over 100 cards.

And Happy birthday to Pat Saylor

Thank you Len Lavenda for sharing your years with amateur Radio with the lunch meeting on Jan 29.

Synopsis by Grace D'Amico: With Len Lavenda’s deep background in corporate communications and his role as Red Cross EmComm (Emergency Communications) Lead for NEPA and the Assistant Emergency Coordinator for Monroe County ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services), he shared with us the importance of Amateur Radio beyond a hobby.  Natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, had no other form of communication available in some areas for over a week.  When cell towers, landlines, and power systems failed due to widespread devastation, hams provided critical, uninterrupted contact for rescue and relief efforts. Currently there are ¾ of a million operators in the US.  No license is required to listen/monitor, but an FCC license is required to transmit.

For more information, visit the National Association of Amateur Radio at https://www.arrl.org/ or contact the local Red Cross office in Stroudsburg where meetings are held every 2nd Thursday at the control center.

Stay warm and safe.  Looks like we may have a heat wave this week 40 degrees.

District Update

District Governor Tim Genetti attended and shared some concerns at our lunch meeting.  Rotary International wants to merge District 7410 into larger District. A letter was sent disputing this. The only possibility for success is that our District 7410 needs to maintain 1100 active membersAll clubs are doing their part to bring in new members who will be engaged in joining our Rotary family. DG Tim Genetti's goal challenge for Stroudsburgs Rotary is to net 6 new members.  Let's aim for 10 before March 31.  We have two new applicants, let's keep them coming.  If any Honorary Rotarians are able to become active again that would be very helpful.
